A Short History Of Yoga Practice

Yoga is a way to find peace. It promotes healthy living and eliminates all impurities from deep within your mind. The exact origin of yoga is unknown but many sources have revealed that it is one of the oldest gift from ancient times. Modern day postures are known to everyone but only a few people know about real yogic history. So here is a brief overview of yogic history.

The origin of yogic practice

As mentioned above, the actual origin of yoga is still unknown. Many efforts were given to find actual place and period of origin but no satisfactory results were found. However, some sources showed that India was the first place where yoga was practiced.

Previously, archaeologists thought that yoga existed in 500 BC during the period of Lord Buddha. But in 1920, excavation of Indus valley civilization explained that yoga has been around since many years. While digging, many yogi like statues were found which depicted the amazing link between yoga and the Indian culture. Since then, numerous debates have been conducted to find an exact answer for origin of yoga.
The entire history of yogic practice can be divided into different generations which are mentioned here below-

The Vedic Era– The oldest generation of yoga is called the Vedic era. This era belongs to the time of 1500 BC to 1200 BC. All marvelous chants and yoga practices came from this period only. The teachings and skills of Vedas were found in Vedic yoga. The four Vedas held huge importance during this period. It’s believed that during this era, yogis isolated themselves from their daily life to find peace. They practiced along by chanting various words and phrases.
The pre classical Era – After Vedic, the next generation which came is the pre classical era. This generation belonged to the period of 800 to 500 BC when the Upanishads were created. Various Vedic practices were further explained through Upanishads. Additionally, during 500 BC, another Hindu scripture revealed the relation between the Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga and the karma yoga. These three yoga explained the real value of Supreme Being, wisdom and selflessness. It was a period when yoga found a new turn and moved towards Buddhism.
The classical or the Buddhist era– During 200 BC, yoga and its practice improved a lot. The Patanjali or the yoga sutras played a big role in ensuring proper development of yoga practice The 196 sutras emphasized about Raja Yoga to find peace. They brought many changes and revealed the eight elements of yogic practice. These elements were Yama, Niyama, Asana, Prayanama, Pratyahara, Dharna, Dhyana and Samadhi. According to them, these elements are a pathway to find peace.
The post classical era– In this era, yoga was taken for physical and mental development. The period focused on treating body like a temple. Various practices were designed to rejuvenate body parts and enhance their efficiency. Many asanas and postures were practiced during this period.
The post classical period has given a way to the modern era. In this era, yoga is resurrecting in a new and global way. Today, a large number of people are practicing yoga for complete development. Almost all corners of the world have accepted the real value of yogic practice.
